Not essential for 10 people or less, but it does have some advantages. For example, your mail becomes centralised and so can be backed up each day; messages sent between members of staff are processed locally and don't have to make a round trip across the internet; and Exchange (the email server from Microsoft) offers extra facilities beyond basic email such as shared calendars and tasks.
Exchange is included as standard with the Microsoft Small Business Server.
