A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO SMALL OFFICE COMPUTER NETWORKS

your questions answered

Should we use virtualisation?

Virtualisation is currently very fashionable, with many claims circulating for how it can lower computing costs and improve service. The essence of virtualisation is that it divides one physical server computer into multiple 'virtual' ones. One physical server may therefore have several partitions set up, each with its own operating system and each working in total isolation from the next.

This has real advantages for larger system installations but limitations for small business servers. With a small business server, all of the programs and services are brought together into a single system so that they can be managed centrally from one screen. This simplifies the management of the server but runs counter to the virtual approach and can raise conflicts.
